Introduction

How to composite real fire in to a shot! It will show you how to make a screen to shoot your real fire and then how to composite it in After Effects.

Why?

You can buy royalty free video of fire, but part of the fun of independent film making is doing it yourself. This tutorial gives you a cheap way of doing it your own way, giving you more flexibility to fit your desired shot!

What you will need:
  • Black paint/ Spray £1
  • Wooden board (as big as you want- price depends) £2
  • Equipment for fire (matches and paper)
Quick Steps
  1. Make a black screen by painting cardboard or wood with black paint or spray
  2. Film the fire (read warnings) with the screen behind
  3. Import footage in to After Effects and colour correct
  4. Change transfer mode to screen and them color correct

Tips
  • Use a tripod when filming the fire!
  • I shot the fire in slow motion at 210 frames per second with my Casio Exilim EX-FC100.
  • The screen you are shooting on needs to be as black as possible. You will find out why when you get in to AE.
  • You could try filming it when it is darker, to make the screen as black as possible.
